Cold press juicers, without the marketing
What genuinely differs between slow and centrifugal juicers, which claims survive scrutiny, and the practical trade-offs that decide whether you'll still be using it in a year.

What the two types actually do
The difference is mechanical, not magical. One grinds and presses; the other shreds and spins.

What holds up
- Yield from leafy greens. This is the clearest, least disputed difference. Kale, spinach, herbs and wheatgrass give noticeably more juice from a masticating machine. Centrifugal juicers struggle with them.
- Less oxidation and separation. Less air is introduced, so the juice keeps its colour and doesn't split as quickly in the glass.
- Quieter. A meaningful difference if you juice early in a house with other people asleep in it.
What doesn't
The enzyme argument. You'll see "preserves enzymes" everywhere. Dietary enzymes are denatured by stomach acid whichever way the juice was made, so preserving them in the glass doesn't translate into a benefit in you. It's a marketing line, not a reason to buy.
Multi-day storage claims. Some sites claim cold-pressed juice keeps for three days. Fresh juice is unpasteurised — see the safety note below. Better colour retention isn't the same thing as being safe to drink days later.
Large nutritional differences. Cold press is gentler and some studies show better retention of heat- and oxygen-sensitive compounds, but the differences are modest and vary by produce. If someone quotes you a dramatic percentage, ask where it came from.
The trade-offs nobody mentions
These decide whether the machine gets used or ends up in a cupboard, and they matter more than any nutrition argument.

Be realistic about how often you'll actually juice, and how much cleaning you'll tolerate at the end of it. Someone juicing greens several times a week gets real value from a slow juicer. Someone juicing oranges on a Sunday does not.
What to compare before buying
- Warranty on the motor. Often ten years or more on better machines, and it's the part that fails. Check what's covered and by whom in Australia.
- Vertical or horizontal. Vertical is more compact and easier to feed; horizontal generally handles wheatgrass better and can do other jobs like nut butters.
- Chute width. Directly determines your prep time.
- Parts to clean, and whether they're dishwasher safe. Count them.
- Australian support and spare parts. A local distributor matters when a screen cracks in year three.
- Pulp dryness. The practical yield measure — squeeze the pulp and see.
Home-made juice is unpasteurised. Drink it soon after making it, or refrigerate it immediately in a sealed container and treat same-day as the limit — don't rely on multi-day claims. Wash produce thoroughly first, and clean the juicer promptly rather than leaving pulp sitting in it.
